Health is not a medical condition. Illness and injuries call for medical interventions, health promotion is best served by non-medical measures. Health is a natural state that can be maintained and improved by people’s everyday living and working environment: walking, cycling, healthy food, access to greenery, social support. Therefore, the World Health Organization initiated the ‘health in all policies’ strategy. The principal aim of the Expertise Center is to foster synergy between various disciplines, each with their own vocabulary, research methods and results: public health experts, economists, managers, architects, landscape architects, urban planners. The biggest challenge is to bridge the gap between medical professionals and designers. Only if they learn to cooperate with each other in the analysis and design of cities and buildings will it be possible to fully exploit the potential in architecture and urban planning to promote public health.
